IS 4923:2017 – Hollow section for structural purpose
This calculator follows the
IS 4923:2017
guidelines for Cold-Formed Welded Steel Hollow Sections (SHS & RHS). It defines
the mechanical properties, sectional dimensions, and tolerances
required for strength and weldability.

MS Square/Rectangular Pipe Weight Chart
The weight of MS Square and Rectangular Hollow Pipes depends on outer dimensions and wall thickness.
Theoretical weights are based on steel density (7.85 g/cm³).
*Theoretical values may vary slightly based on BIS tolerances.
How to Calculate MS Square/Rectangular Pipe Weight
Weight (kg) = 2 × (Width + Height − 2 × Thickness) × Thickness × 0.00785 × Length
Where:
Width = Outer Width (mm)
Height = Outer Height (mm)
Thickness = Wall Thickness (mm)
Length = Pipe Length (m)
Example: For a 50×25 mm pipe with 2 mm thickness and 6 m length:
Weight = 2 × (50 + 25 − 4) × 2 × 0.00785 × 6 = 13.39 kg
Why Use an MS Square/Rectangular Pipe Weight Calculator
- Accurate Material Estimation: Prevents under or over-ordering.
- Cost Calculation: Auto-calculates total price and GST.
- Time-Saving: Eliminates manual calculation errors.
- Transport Planning: Helps determine total load for logistics.
